My Non-Negotiables When Traveling

I’m often asked how I manage to stay grounded and focused when I’m on the road — whether I’m traveling for work or with my family.

If you know me, you know I travel a lot. And I quickly realized that travel can be chaotic if you let it. But over the years, I’ve learned that keeping a few key routines in place helps me show up at my best.

These are my 3 non-negotiables when I travel, and they help me stay present, productive, and in the right mindset to truly experience what each trip has to offer.

Keep my morning routine (4-7 AM).

No matter where I am, I keep this block sacred. It’s my time to knock out business issues and clear my inbox; get in a solid workout; and reflect, write, or just be still.

That consistent start helps me mentally reset and set the tone for the day. Once it’s done, I can either lean into family time or focus with clarity on the business at hand.

Explore the area.

I’m a big believer that experience is the best education. And the more we know...the more we know.

Whether it’s for work or pleasure, I always carve out time to explore the local culture and vibe. It helps me learn more about people and see things from different perspectives. I always leave with a fuller view of the world.

Try the food.

Trying the local food is something I never skip. It expands my comfort zone, exposes me to flavors and dishes I may never have a chance to try again, and gives me a better sense of the people and their culture.

Pro tip: Always ask the locals! They'll point you to those hidden gems you won't find online.

Travel has a way of testing your priorities. But I’ve found that when I protect a few simple things, I’m able to stay aligned with who I want to be, no matter the setting.

This helps us create space for focus, connection, and a deeper appreciation of where you are and why you’re there.

I recently took a 3-day work trip and brought the camera along. If you’ve ever wondered what it looks like to travel with purpose (and still make time for the small things that matter), I’d love to have you along for the journey.
