Two women having a conversation

If there’s one thing that’s guaranteed to throw even the best leaders off their game, it’s this:

👉 Walking into a tough conversation unprepared.

I’ve done it.

You’ve probably done it.

And often, the result is the same — you leave the conversation wishing it had gone differently.

Here are 3 things I’ve learned (the hard way) that now shape how I prep for any difficult conversation:

3 Ways to Prep for a Difficult Conversation

Get clear on your facts, not your feelings.

Your emotions might be valid, but they’re not always useful in the moment.

Instead of leading with “I feel like you never…” focus on what’s actually happened. What can’t be argued?

Facts create a common starting point and lower defenses.

Anticipate emotion — both yours and theirs.

Think through your typical reactions under pressure. Do you shut down? Get defensive? And what about them?

Preparing for emotional responses allows you to stay grounded and lead the conversation forward instead of sideways.

Know the one goal you're solving for.

Not five things. Not something vague. Just one clear outcome.

Are you seeking accountability? Clarity? Agreement? Defining this helps you stay focused, even if the conversation gets uncomfortable.
